If you must play with your video settings, there is no need to be
re-booting all the time. Just log in as root and in a terminal type
telinit 3
This sets the run-level of the system down to 3, which happens to be
text mode only. Your
X session will probably die (if it doesn't, just log out), leaving you
with a text mode login.
Log in and start playing with your X settings. To test, type
startx
Now you have no need to re-boot. Whatsmore, you will see all the X
messages flashing by on your console. (You can also find them in
/var/log/XFree86.log or some such file.)
When you have finished fiddling, you can type
telinit 5
which will restore your system to it's previous status of starting X and
presenting a graphical login.
For completeness, I will mention that you can change the default system
run-level by editing
/etc/inittab
which contains a line specifying the default run level.

On my system it is called
/usr/X11R6/bin/Xconfigurator
it belongs to the rpm package
yi-1.0.5-3a
If you don't have it, put in your CD and install it
mount /mnt/cdrom
rpm --install /mnt/cdrom/YellowDog/ppc/yi-1.0.5-3a.ppc.rpm
eject cdrom
Make sure that you type Xconfigurator when you try to start it - unix is
case sensitive.
As for your actual problem with dri, sorry, I don't know.
Ben.
