OK, upgrading to XFree86-4.x seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately not so
simple, mostly becuse I don't have a Rage 128...
I downloaded the binaries from linuxppc.org , installed them and edited
/etc/X11/XF86Config, reacquainting myself with vi along the way ;-)
startx failed, reporting it couldn't find a device. At this point I realized I
needed a driver for the Mach64, according to the instrux at
http://linuxppc.org/usr/xf4/
Unfortunately I'm having trouble with rsync, to wit:
I've created a directory xfree86 into which to rsync the source tree, per
instructions. However when I do
rsync -arvz penguinppc.org::xfree86-pmac
it downloads a list of files, but no actual files.
#ls shows xfree86 to be empty, whereas there should be a whole bunch of source
code there, no?
Am I missing something obvious?
Any advice much appreciated...
