Err.. link how? it should be a link pointing to the actual startup script
in /etc/rc.d/init.d that looks like S99autofs? Are you sure you're
booting into runlevel 5 (eg: straight into a GUI)

I'd try something like:
/sbin/chkconfig --add autofs
/sbin/shkconfig autofs on

If you get errors, read the man page for chkconfig, it has instructions
for how to setup an init script for use with chkconfig (it's easy,
really.. take only a few moments). chkconfig is a very nice and easy way
to edit your runlevels (and xinetd too) and can be used in a terminal
which is nice when you're away from the console.
