I got a QPS Que!Fire 16x10x40 (external firewire) drive working nicely on my Powerbook G3. I put some details up on:

I haven't used any 'YDL' kernels for very long, but if they include SCSI-emulation and the proper firewire support, you can skip the parts about recompiling the kernel and adding it.
