Subject: X Font Server Problems

After running the Helix Gnome Update program to update Gnome over the
internet, my system crashed. After rebooting, the X server failed with the
message, "Unable to load font fixed." Also, even though the xfs font server
is started in level 3, it appears that the X font server is not running.
ps -ef | grep "xfs"
returns nothing.
In the files section of XF86Config, I have the following line for the font
path:
FontPath "unix/:-1"
From what I have been able to learn, this line indicates that the fonts will
be obtained from an X font server. But I removed this line and X was then
able to start up, although it appears to be running more slowly now.
Any information would be appreciated.
