I think that you can sign on as root or superuser, and run
Xconfigurator
this has a bunch of settings for monitors. You can either choose from
a list, or roll your own settings. This seems to work on my G4.
On the other hand, I am having problems with my Power Computing
clone, a Power Tower PPC603 model 180E, which only seems to run at
800x600 resolution. Perhaps the clone video card is not recognized by
Xconfigurator .
