If I remember right, I did only this to get it working:

tar -xvf setiathome-1.3-blah-blah-blah.tar
cd <directory made by un-tarring the file>
chmod +x setiathome (to make it executable)
setiathome

Then it prompted me for my email address, and that was it. It
started downloading a new segment right away, then proceeded to
output a lot of stuff, so I control-c'd it, and changed the command.
Now, I run it in the background with a command like this:

setiathome -nice 19 -email > /dev/null &

This way, I don't see it doing anything, but I know it is running in
the background. It has no output, and the -email command makes it
email you when there is an error.

Let me know if you still have problems.
