Subject: disk partitioning and layout

I read on linuxhq.com that, on new hard disks where there are
more sectors on outer tracks, it's best to put your swap
partition on the outermost tracks. (It's not entirely clear to
me why since outer tracks would have a higher rotational
latency.)
Anyway, assuming that is true, how are disks partitioned and
filled on PowerBook hard disks: from the inside out (in which
case my swap partition should be close to first) or outside in
(in which case my swap partition should be close to last)?
Also, the YDL installation instructions about disk partitioning
mention first to format the partitions as HFS and then later
need to be chaned to AU/X with pdisk. However, the Drive Setup
that comes with MacOS 9 now has, in its partition-type pop-up
menu, specific choices for AU/X formats including "AU/X Root,"
AU/X Swap," "AU/X Free 1," "AU/X Free 2," "AU/X Free 3," and
perhaps a few others I can't recall of the top of my head.
Will using these work? If so, can the partition-type change
step with pdisk be skipped? What are the "Free" partition
types?
