The problem is the 7200 + 8.6, not 8.6 in and of itself.

Gary,
You always boot macOS, at least a little of it - thats how the *BootX
extension gets run. Just take as small slice from the internal that you're
using for linux and put the minimal install of MacOS 8.1/8.0 on that.
