I looked at the archives in the pbbook site that Dan noted
and found that if I modify the panel brightness the sound
changed in pitch and intensity. If I leave the brighness one
notch above minimum, the sound is tolerable (i.e. can't hear
it at all). On the following web page, some folks have found that
apple will repair/replace the offending components. Check it
out...
