Hi

I'm running MacOS 8.6 with OT 2.5.1f1 (which came with my G4). I've
been running MOL for a while now (it's great) and until now I have
had an ethertap connection with Linux working perfectly.

Unfortunately it doesn't work with MOL 0.9.48. Here are the addresses I use:

Linux
=====
192.168.1.1
fe:fd:bb:bb:bb:bb

MacOS
=====
192.168.1.2
fe:fd:aa:aa:aa:aa

Having different MAC addresses was the only way I could get ethertap
working with OT 2.5.1 (which wasn't supposed to be possible at the
time). I do it by using ifconfig to change tap0's MAC address about
20 seconds after MOL has started. By that time it has grabbed the
original MAC address of tap0 (fe:fd:aa:aa:aa:aa). I can then change
it to something else (fe:fd:bb:bb:bb:bb) and the MacOS and Linux side
believe they're on a proper ethernet.

But now, for some reason, packets don't get back and forth.

Here is the output of tethereal running on tap0, when I try to ping
MacOS from Linux.

Capturing on tap0
fe:fd:bb:bb:bb:bb -> ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff ARP Who has 192.168.1.2? Tell
192.168.1.1
fe:fd:aa:aa:aa:aa -> fe:fd:bb:bb:bb:bb ARP 192.168.1.2 is at fe:fd:aa:aa:aa:aa
192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.1.2 ICMP Echo (ping) request
192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.1.2 ICMP Echo (ping) request
192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.1.2 ICMP Echo (ping) request
192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.1.2 ICMP Echo (ping) request

Obviously MacOS can receive packets from Linux, or it wouldn't reply
to the ARP request. Clearly Linux can get packets from MacOS, or it
wouldn't use the ARP reply to start pinging. So I can only assume the
ethernet filter is selectively filtering out packets?

Could the author of the ethernet filter please tell me which bits of
code I need to comment out to experiment with these things?? Or could
a configuration option be added to /etc/molrc so that we can turn off
the ethernet filter? Or will I have to upgrade to MacOS 9??

Congratulations to everybody on MOL for such a fantastic bit of
software. I still find it miraculous even now :-)

Many thanks

Ade
