The real problem would probably be that there ain't any patches for the
development (2.3+) kernels, at least there weren't last time I looked.
The 2.2.15-patches most certainly won't apply to 2.4pre (therefore the
runtime patching failed, too). I'm afraid you'd have to wait for more
recent patches to come out, or stay with a 2.2.x kernel til then.
