I have one particular video mode that fails when tested explicitly, but
succeeds when tested as the current video mode.

When probing misc.modes, it checks 1280x1024-60 and fails immediately
(without testing all three depths).
But if I decline to test ibook.modes & misc.modes, and test the current
mode, it succeeds.
My console's current mode is 1280x1024x75hz 16-bit. (vmode 20 16)

I have 4mb platinum video on a catalyst (7200) Mac. (PowerCenter actually.)
With only 4mb, it can't run in 24-bit at 1280x1024. Maybe this has something
to do with it?

My solution was to test the current mode, then test the rest without
clearing the existing modes. 1280x1024 16-bit works fine in MOL.
