I found the problem. It turns out that the the kernel symbol
giveup_altivec_R__ver_giveup_altivec , or anything_R__ver_anything
indicates that the kernel was not compiled correctly. Something about
versioning info being set incorrectly in the makefile. Doing a make
mrproper before compiling seems to fix the trouble. I don't know the
details, do a google search on _R kernel module for more info.
