I'm a few versions behind on most things, but

insmod /lib/modules/2.4.10-12a/kernel/drivers/net/[something...]

might help (ie. there's one or more needed kernel modules that are
not loaded, like there's no ethX device unless the card driver is
loaded. Normally they should be configured to autoload, but just to
get it up for the first time, a manual load can be handy)
