What do all these error messages mean?

My guess is that your gcc (C compiler) isn't properly installed.

Try the following commands:

rpm -q gcc
rpm -q binutils
rpm -q compat-libs

When you installed your system, did you install the development tools?

If not, you will have to get the rpms from yellowdog.
