FWIW I have the same symptoms with VPC version 4.

Yes, indeed. Without MOL audio (and it has to be a recent
version, e.g. Feb 2003), VPC version 3 does not run,
giving an error (-50); and VPC version 4 does not run,
giving a bogus error message about the amount of free memory.

When MOL Audio is installed, VPC 3 runs normally so far as
I can tell, but VPC 4 shows the symtpoms you describe: The video
remains black and there is no disk activity.

Is there any plan for getting VPC 4 running?
