Problem still remains. Below is a table of my results.

System	Extensions	ROM	OFTree	Results
-----------------------------------------------
7.5.3	n/a 7200	7200	Black screen. Maps GC, then hangs
7.5.3	ON 7200	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Macintosh."
7.5.3	OFF 7200	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Macintosh."
7.5.3	n/a 7300	7200	Black screen. Maps GC, then hangs
7.5.3	ON 7300	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Macintosh."
7.5.3	OFF 7300	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Macintosh."
7.5.3	n/a 7500	7200	Black screen. Maps GC, then...
					"nvram: Isn't nvram_addr read only?"
7.5.3	ON 7500	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Macintosh."
7.5.3	OFF 7500	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Macintosh."

8.0	n/a 7200	7200	Black screen. Maps GC, then...
					"53c94: Read from Write-Only register"
8.0	ON 7200	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Mac OS"
8.0	OFF 7200	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Mac OS"
8.0	n/a 7300	7200	Black screen. Maps GC, then hangs
8.0	ON 7300	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Mac OS"
8.0	OFF 7300	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Mac OS"
8.0	n/a 7500	7200	Black screen. Maps GC, then hangs
8.0	OFF 7500	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Mac OS"
8.0	OFF 7500	8500	Hangs at "Welcome to Mac OS"

Specifying the Processor type as 604 does not help (or hurt) anything.
Switching the CD-ROM drive from the External bus (in an enclosure) to the
Internal bus (plugged directly into the drive) does not help (or hurt)
anything.

As you can see, incidentally, the oftree you use DOES make a difference.
(So where's that "ofdump" utility's source? ;) Sorry to bother.)

The last things I see on the console when it gets to "Welcome to
Macintosh" (7.5.3) or "Welcome to Mac OS" (8.0) and hangs, are:

------------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping GC at F3000000
dcbi treated as nop

I have been quite thorough. Can you help please?
