using MacOS 8.1 on Powerbook G3

It'll probably be useful at some point to identify which model your friend 
has. I recommend http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3-guide.html for this.

I have a Kanga running Yellow Dog Linux 2.2 and mol though I've not used it 
a lot yet.
