Hmm, you're right... I set it back to 'any' and re-commented out the  
example alsa and oss settings, and I do get sound again... although  
it appears to be using OSS rather than ALSA, but I can live with  
that.  Was sure I'd tried that before... maybe my latest rebuild  
fixed it :)
