Post install fails...

I've installed YDL 2.2 on a PowerMac 7500 with a PowerLogix G3 card 
and ATI graphics card (don't remember which model - pretty old)
Following the installation I want to enable both telnet and ftp 
services, so I attempt to launch the Services program. Turns out it 
is a
python shell around more python shells - python fails dumping a lot 
of information to the console which I can't see while in X. I thought
that I could install webmin from the .rpm packages and they fail as 
well - different error messages.

I booted using the vmlinux2.2 in BootX because attempts to boot with 
vmlinux it doesn't recognize the video card.

Why doesn't python work - is it not ready for prime time as a 
language yet? It seems strange that all these tools are written in 
python
and I haven't yet found one python script that runs! I therefore must 
assume that the 12 different clean installs of YDL 2.2 on my 7500
all failed (is YDL 2.2 not ready for prime time then?) even though 
the installer seems to think all was well.

Has anybody seen this problem or know of a solution?
