The two goals, "getting userland apps fixed" and "enabling users"
are at odds, and the philosophy of leaving users without sound, in
this case, certainly isn't what an average linux user wants. 

And since when is byte swapping in a -driver-, such as 'dmasound',
considered undesireable? Drivers have to do all manner of ugly,
funky manipulations to make hardware usable. Byte swapping doesn't
seem like any kind of sin in this regard.
