but I tried the command "md5sum rome-2.2-20020407-install.iso" which

an ascii string that certainly doesnt match the one shown on the YDL md5sum
file.

Although it's possible the file was garbled from the start, be careful not 
to open or mount the ydl.iso in MacOS. This will definitely alter the 
checksum. If you still have the original (untouched) .iso file, you could 
try checksum on that and if OK, burn it.
