Ext3 conversion

I compiled ext3 support directly into the kernel (2.4.18-ben0). I upgraded to the e2fsprogs from the 2.2 ftp site.
I converted two of my partitions to ext3. So far no problems. How do I convert my root filesystem seeing as it must be unmounted to do it? Does the compressed disk image on my HFS partition (I'm using bootx) have the tune2fs binary on it? I could boot that image and run it. Anyone tried this without booting off the 2.2 cd?
