Personally, I prefer "halt" instead of poweroff.  Fewer keystrokes
for one :-).  Sounds more authoratative, as well (okay, so maybe
it's because I live in a German-speaking country).

I don't think you need to be root to do these.  A user should be able to do this,
by default.... especially on a single user machine.
