Installing YDL 2.2 on external scsi

I have a blue & white G3 with macos 9.2 on the internal scsi drive.  I have an
external scsi drive that i would like to install YDL on to.

When i do the install everything looks good until i try and restart.  It will
only start up under the macos.
Everything i can find talks about having the macos and ydl on the same drive.  

I had champion server 1.2 installed on the external scsi using bootx.  And
worked until i upgraded to 9.2.  Now it wants to use yaboot.  I would really
like to avoid re-installing the macos.
Any help on where to go from here?
