can you ping any other IP address? if you can ping by number but not by
name, then it's definitely a dns issue. in which case, all you need to do is
add your DNS servers to /etc/resolv.conf

domain xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

the ISP i work for has public DNS servers so you could use mine if you
aren't sure of earthlinks. a temporary solution til you can find out.
