YDL 2.2 `base' v. `home-office' install

Hi ya'll, I'm not having much success installing YDL 2.2.

I managed to successfully install the "base install" using the 2.2 GUI
kernel (unfortunately the base install doesn't seem to install the graphica=
l
login window/X-Windows/KDE (or does it & the installer simply doesn't set i=
t
up for you?). I tried running Xconfigurator as root and it doesn't do
anything. The screen flashes blue and then goes back to the command-line
prompt. "startx" and "xstart" don't seem to do a whole lot (or do you have
to be in some particular dir to run startx/xstart?)

Anyway, I tried installing the "home-office" install with the 2.2 kernel GU=
I
installer but it flakes out after formatting the drives with a dependency
error (or something like that). Last night I got pages upon pages of errors
starting with

OS Error: [Errno2] No such file or directory.

File "/usr/lib/yi/timezone.py", line 156 in doList
dir_list=3Dos.listdir(path)
File "/usr/lib/yi/timezone.py", line 58 in getTimezoneInfo
<snip>
File "/usr/lib/yi/timezone.py", line 35 in configure
<snip>
etc.

Setup:
1270 MB for Linux
256 MB for swap
10 MB for boot

Now is this (i) a bad CD (the whole... mount in Finder thing... any way to
calculate a CRC to compare to a known value... I can probably reinstall YDL
2.1 to do it if necessary?), (ii) not enough disk space (YDL 2.1 happily
installed the kitchen sink into the 1270 MB with a few 100 MB to spare) or
(iii) something else?

FYI modification dates:
Created & modified on YDL-2.2 CD:        8/4/2002, 02:34.
C&M on "Desktop DB" & "Desktop DF":      8/4/2002, 01:34:46.
C&M on "rome-2.2-20020407-install.iso":  8/4/2002, 06:57

These creation and modification dates lead me to believe that the ISO was
not changed before (or after) burning (Toast 5.0.2 OS 9).

CPU: B&W G3/450 (n=E9e 350 Rev 2), stock 16 MB ATI RAGE video, stock PCI SCSI
(Adaptec 2930), ADB trackball + keyboard, 576 MB RAM, stock (?) 12 GB IDE
drive partitioned into 1270 MB Linux, 256 MB Linux swap (turned a 1.5 GB
"extra" OS 9 partition into a Linux section), 10 MB boot loader, 2.99 GB OS
X, ~7 GB OS 9.

Should I try reducing the swap partition and enlarging the Linux partition?
And, if so, how small can I safely make the swap partition with 576 MB of
real RAM?
