ppp problems

Since installing 2.2, when I run the ifup-ppp script in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts, I get the following error message:

basename: too few arguments
Try `basename --help' for more information.
./ifup-ppp: ifcfg-: No such file or directory
Failed to activate with error 28

When I run ifdown-ppp, I get:

basename: too few arguments
Try `basename --help' for more information.
basename: too few arguments
Try `basename --help' for more information.
./ifdown-ppp: .: filename argument required
.: usage: . filename

As you might guess, I can't bring the ppp interface up and down easily
as needed. I can dial out and make a good connection with wvdial, rp3,
and kppp -- BUT, I can't bring the ppp interface up at boot, have the
connection persist, etc. using these latter methods.

I have the feeling that I am missing some scripts, a file, or needed
info somehow, but can't figure it out. I tried a reinstall of ppp to no
avail.

Anyone have any ideas?
