ADC CRT 17in apple display

I have a G4 dual 450 with an original radeon agp ADC. The monitor is the apple 17 inch crt studio display. I have just installed YDL 2.2, but have to use the novideo option, or equivalently: linux video=ofonly. The screen just blanks halfway through booting if i don't use this option. 
Can i get graphics with this monitor + graphics card, if so which kernel and what kernel arguments should i use, plus what  display should i choose when i run dexter.py?
