PowerBook G3 with upgrade card

I have a PowerBook G3 Lombard and installed a Blue Bird G4 (500mhz) 
upgrade card. It works fine with OS 9
and OS X but trashes Linux.  Linux won't install at ALL if the G4 
card is in. If I swap it out and put the original G3 back, I can 
install Linux fine. When I put the G4 card back in, I can run Linux a 
few times before it hopelessly corrupts the file system.  Any ideas?
