The support  seems not to be  built into the installers, 
ramdisk-text.image.gz or ramdisk-x11.image.gz.  Seems strange that it 
would be removed.  All went well until partitioning time, at which 
point it was "no hard disks found".

Checking dmesg at that point, I saw that there was no controller found either.
