I've never heard of anyone using multiple swap partitions. Now that 
could be my ignorance, but I think it's very likely this is causing you 
problems. The amount of swap space you need really depends on what 
you'll be doing. Unless you're running lots of memory hungry apps at the 
same time you should rarely need that much. the 2x RAM rule is a bit out 
of date now that people have more RAM. I'd just set it to 256MB and you 
should be just fine.
