I was assuming some minor difference between 0.9.9 and 1.0.0 accounted
for it.  But I'll look for missing -devel packages.  I have 119 of
them installed, but I could easily be missing something essential...

Thanks for the tip -- I wouldn't have thought to look at the problem
that way.
