apt-get bug in version detection?

Right, I did the 'apt-get update', I just didn't bother to include it in 
the fragment I posted.

The actual problem was that I was missing a required update to apt 
itself (specifically, a correction to the default config file) which is 
not mentioned anywhere on YDL's 2.3 update page.  Clearly other users 
already knew about this,  though I'm not sure how.
