video problem with ydl 2.3 and xfree86 on powerbook g4

I ran Xconfigurator from virtual console 1
and selected the failsafe option.

This gave me 1280x854 8-bit color
so I changed the default color depth to 16 bit
in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
which is still noticeably inferior to 24 bit color
but X failed when I selected 24 bit color.
