That's good news, I assume that indeed this
is on Ti 550 with a Radeon card?

Could you send me your XFreeConfig-4 file?
How did you configure your X?

When I try 24 bits (startx -- -depth 24)
X starts but gives me a broken color pattern,
totally unusable.

With 32 bits X doesn't start, complaining
about lack of available screens.
