AbiWord won't start: Could not find fonts

I am getting this startup dialog where it complains it
can't find local font files in the current font path
(yes, I am launching the wrapper script and not the
binary).

In the dialog, it says the current font path is
/usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts. This directory contains a
boatload of pfa and afm files.

I am running fvwm2.

Any suggestions appreciated.
