Silent sound

YDL 2.2 w/ fvwm2 on iMac Rev. B, 160MB

I recompiled the kernel with modular sound support.
When I run xmms or gtcd, the sound modules load just
fine,
/sbin/lsmod gives:

A .wav file in xmms makes nice waves in the client
window but remains silent.

gtcd seems to play the CD (shows the titles and time
advances) - silently.

Actions so far: chmod 666 /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp.
With reloading of modules. Chosen OSS driver in xmms.

Help appreciated.
