Actually, the hardware is perfectly capable of supporting a slave 
drive.  Linux can use a slave on one of these machines.  The 
difficulty is that the firmware shipped with Revision A of the beige 
G3 motherboard does not understand slaves, so you cannot boot from a 
slave.  Revisions B and C of the board have revised firmware that 
supports slaves.
