Odd means of getting sound in KDE

So I have YDL 2.2 installed on a Pismo Powerbook. Sound in KDE doesn't work, I get the standard dev/dsp not found thingy on startup.

I have stumbled onto a way to make it work, and was wondering if anyone could verify or explain. If I kill X with ctrl+alt+delete (backspace really) it restarts, and logging in again I have perfectly normal sound coming from arts, totally default kernel. This trick only works after it has tried to start sound once and failed. If I kill it in the start sequence prior to the failure it will simply get around to failing next time.
