That should be

mount -t hfs /dev/hda6 /mnt/somewhere

And the directory somewhere must exist before you make that command.

/etc/fstab is used for easy automounting at boot time and for you to be
able to do

mount /mnt/somewhere

and acheive the same as the longer command above. You would have to add a
line into fstab for this to work, see man fstab for more information.
