I had LOADS of trouble initially with a 15" FlatPanel (2001) 
connected to the ADC on my early G4 until I realized I had to run 
Xconfigurator at every boot.  The problem ended up being Xautoconfig 
re-running at every boot.  The 15" flat panel optimally only supports 
1024x768 @ 60Hz.  Once I got that set I had no problems.

Interesting:  IS it, in fact, possible to hook a monitor up to the 
ADC and ANOTHER to the "standard" port and use BOTH at once?!  I 
always thought that was "either or"...
