This looks good, and precisely the same as on my system.

So, char-major-156 deals with Specialix RIO serial card, which you
don't have I would assume. Besides, modprobe cannot find
char-major-156 on my machine (with a working modem) either, so again
everything looks fine to me.

Looks good too!

Up to this point, everything looks right.

Oops. That's obviously not good! It is a stupid question, but are
you sure that you got the right phone number? This may explain
things, but I assume that it is not the case (it'd be just too easy
;-) ).

Now, you upgraded the kernel, right? Did you run again hcfusbconfig
(it should be in /usr/sbin)? I do have to run it again each time I
change the kernel, otherwise the thing will refuse to work. In fact,
there is yet another peculiar thing, I have to run hcfusbconfig
_twice_. Also, answer "yes" to the question "Should we attempt to
automatically configure your hardware?" and make sure you answer "no"
to "existing HCF modules found under
/lib/modules/2.4.20-pre7-ben0/misc/ Would you like to keep using
them?" (of course, the actual directory name might be different on
your system).

In passing, I noticed that my modem hangs at dialing the phone number
when I attempt to run a version not built for the current kernel;
yours get a bit farther but not by much, so it is a good chance that
this is the problem.

Oh yeah, while the new modules are installed, you are also asked for
the location of the source build directory for the kernel, with the
answer defaulting to /lib/modules/<your kernel version>/build. This
is actually a symlink pointing to the sources of your kernel--make
sure it really points to the proper place.

I am out of ideas, so please try these and get back to us if the thing
still refuses to connect, time at which I will hopefully be able to
think of something else (or maybe this will work, that'd be better).

Stefan
