New (Nov 02) iBook (G3 800-Radeon7500, 12") and Installing YDL 2.3?

I picked up one of the upgunned 12" iBooks with the G3 800 and the Radeon
7500, and I've been trying to install the 2.3 version of YDL.

I've not had much luck.

I partioned the 30 GB drive, reinstalled OS X on the second, 20GB
partition, and am trying to install YDL on the unallocated, first
partition.

Using the default gui installation results in a seemingly black screen once
the gui installer runs.  What seems to be happening is that the installer
turns off the backlighting.

Okay, so I try the text mode, safe video installation using the custom
installation. This installer works until the mount point step comes into
play.  At this point, the installer either crashes or just seems to hang
once the mount point is set.  

The "easy" installation crashes if I try that method also.

Any ideas?  Any comments?  Should I have bought the installation support?
