Thanks for your reply, Markus. On my system fbset says

mode "1280x1024-71"
    # D: 100.000 MHz, H: 75.758 kHz, V: 71.201 Hz
    geometry 1280 1024 1280 1024 8
    timings 10000 16 16 16 16 8 8
    rgba 8/0,8/0,8/0,0/0
endmode

which looks like 24 bit color. The little penguin also looks full color
at boot :-). So it seems like it's just a problem with X. (?)

Might it work to put exactly those settings into XF86Config4 as a modeline?

I might be erring, but dexter.py is nothing else than a graphical frontend
to xconfigurator, so you should have and already used it ...

What color depth do you get for your console? I haven't discovered all
secrets of video-configuration of YDL yet, but it seems that I can't use
truecolor for X if my console runs at 8bit-color. "fbset" should give your
info on the video mode your console is set to.

BTW, does anyone know what happened to the vmode-command in YDL ???? There
seems to be another command "nvvideo", but that doesn't change anything,
well at least commands like "fbset" still work ...;
