Hi,

I always have experiences that 15 bpp gives far better X in these
old machines. Try DefaultDepth 15 in the Section "Screen" of your 
XF86Config-4 file. (You need SubSection "Display", Depth   15.
If you have not, you can change 16 => 15 in the current XF86Config-4)
