From the sym53c8xx driver's change log file in 2.4.x, support for the
LSI Logic 53C1010 chip used on the UL3 series cards began as of version
1.6 of the driver (well, sort of -- it looks like there was a branch
due to two developers working on different things, followed by merging,
so the first version to show up in an official kernel with 53C1010
support might have been 1.7 or later). From some of TerraSoft's
support pages, it looks like 1.2.1 shipped with a customized 2.2.17
kernel. 2.2.17 from ftp.kernel.org has version 1.3g of the sym53c8xx
driver, so that makes me think that your problem was one of being a
little ahead of the driver support curve.
Whew. I was kind of worried that I might run into serious problems if
I should ever try to set up a Linux system with a UL3 series card.

You can say that again. I was pretty happy when ybin gained the
ability to figure out SCSI OF paths.
