to rebuild an rpm frpm a source rpm (as root) issue "rpm --rebuild 
foo-version.src.rpm" the binary rpm should be in /usr/src/rpm/RPMS/ppc.  
There's probably a nifty way to do it with apt as well.. but I haven't 
really had the time to learn how to compile packages yet

Nope, but you can try nut (it might even be installed, if not "apt-get 
install nut nut-cgi") which should monitor your ups (and other things) 
just fine.
