Problem with ATI Rage 128 in 8600

Hi list,
I have a problem with an ATI Rage 128 PCI in a 8600:
with the "r128" drivers the X Server won't start, because 
he can't read the V-ROM (error message). Also with the 
"ati" drivers I get the same problem. Only with the 
"fbdev" drivers the video card works, but so I can't 
enable 3D hardware acceleration. Also my 17" monitor runs 
in a very strange resolution: it shall be 1024x768 but 
looks like 640x480 in a bad frequenzy mode.

Anybody can help me to help this cosmetic problems?
